FastBIT begins to work the third time a file is backed up – the first backup is a full backup, and the second is an incremental backup. From the third backup onwards, FastBIT compares the first version of the file with the latest version, and extracts the differences between the two. These differences are known as a Patch. This patch file is often 85% to 99.9% smaller than the original, complete, file which is where you make your savings.
